“The world depends on plants. Every breath of air we take, and every mouthful of food we eat, depends upon plants”
Sir David Attenborough
We rely on the world of plants for our survival. Plants are the backbone of all life on Earth. They produce the oxygen we breathe, provide us with food and medicine, purify our water, regulate the climate, protect soil from erosion, add nutrients to to soil, and so much more. Plants truly have life-giving powers.
The world of plants ranges in size from tiny mosses to giant trees. Mosses are the oldest land plants, with the first mosses appearing around 450 million years ago. Flowering plants are the most diverse and successful group of plants on Earth. They make up 90% of the plant kingdom and can be found almost everywhere.
Why are plants green? Chlorophyll gives plants their green colour. This pigment absorbs red and blue light, but reflects green light making plants appear green. Plants have different shades of green because of different amounts of chlorophyll in their leaves.
Every plant has a special character and a unique role to play in your garden. By incorporating a diverse mix of plants, you can create a thriving garden. Plant diversity ensures there is an array of colours, textures and scents. Flowers embody natural beauty into a garden. While, plants with unique foliage help add texture and dimension to your garden. A diverse garden will turn your green space into a stunning masterpiece.
“When you plant something, you invest in a beautiful future amidst stressful, chaotic and, at times, downright appalling world”
